Indulge in the ultimate comfort food with these creamy, velvety mashed potatoes. Combining the natural earthiness of Yukon Gold potatoes with the sharp richness of aged cheddar and the smooth melt of Gruyere, this dish is a crowd-pleasing classic. Perfect for any meal, these potatoes are whipped to perfection using warmed dairy for a light, airy, and intensely flavorful side that pairs beautifully with your favorite main course.

Ingredients

Scale

3 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup heavy cream, warmed
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, freshly grated
1/2 cup Gruyere cheese, freshly grated
2 tbsp salt for boiling water
Sea salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

Peel the potatoes and cut them into uniform two-inch chunks.
Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water by two inches.
Add two tablespoons of salt to the water and bring to a boil.
Cook for 15 to 20 minutes until a fork slides through the center easily.
Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the warm pot to evaporate excess moisture.
Mash the potatoes using a ricer or hand masher until smooth.
Slowly stir in the warmed heavy cream and softened butter until incorporated.
Fold in the grated sharp cheddar and Gruyere cheeses until fully melted and combined.
Season with sea salt and black pepper to taste and serve warm.

Notes

Ensure potatoes are fully drained to avoid watery mash. Use room temperature butter and warm cream for the best emulsion. For a lighter texture, use a potato ricer instead of a masher.
