Experience the quintessential baked dessert with this classic apple crisp recipe. Combining firm Granny Smith and sweet Honeycrisp apples, this dish offers a complex sweet-tart profile beneath a golden, crunchy oat streusel. The secret lies in the butter texture, ensuring a perfect contrast between bubbling fruit juices and a buttery, crisp top. Ideal for any occasion, this comforting treat is a reliable favorite for home cooks seeking consistent, crowd-pleasing results.

Ingredients

Scale

6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
2 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup all-purpose flour, divided
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
1.5 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Grease a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick spray or butter.
In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with 2 tablespoons of flour, half the sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
In a separate bowl, combine remaining flour, oats, brown sugar, and remaining cinnamon.
Cut the cold cubed butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle the oat mixture generously over the apple filling to cover the surface.
Bake for 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.

Notes

Keep butter in small, pea-sized chunks to ensure a superior, jagged crunch. Do not over-process the streusel as it may turn into a flat, cookie-like layer. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
